For this blog post, I am going to tell you everything there is to know about Class Dojo! Class Dojo is an online behavior management tool that you, the teacher, and the students will love! Class Dojo is fun, but also great to communicate with parents! Below is a video that will explain how to set it up, and also how it works!
As you can see, each students in your class is assigned a monster to represent them on Class Dojo. The students have their own portfolios online to keep everything nice and organized. As you seen in the video, or are going to see, is that the kids have numbers by their names and monsters. This number determines how well they are doing in class. The higher the number, the better behaved they are. Communication is important as well, and on Class Dojo, the teacher is able to communicate and send messages to parents through Class Dojo, and the parents are able to see how well their child did if they are signed up for Class Dojo. Class Dojo is a neat and very fun way to keep track of the students' behaviors! If you want to check it out, you can go to www.classdojo.com/ ! Thanks!

The first source I want to talk about is Donors Choose. You can find this information at www.donorschoose.org/ . Donors Choose is a wonderful organization that cares about giving the kids in the classroom the most appropriate and best education that they deserve. They try and provide tools and resources that the students need in order to succeed. This is useful, because I could sign up to be a member to help them give to schools all over. Giving to others would make me appreciate what I have and what my school has compared to schools that are poorer. The next is Pinterest! This site is a fun site that allows people to shop for anything and everything unique and creative! Pinterest has a lot of cute and fun teacher ideas on there anywhere from how to decorate your classroom to how to create fun objects! This site is great for my educational growth, because this allows me to think outside the box a little! I love using Pinterest, and I have actually created a lot of fun teacher things from the ideas found on Pinterest! You can spark your creativity at www.pinterest.com/ ! The last is my favorite, and that is Teachers Pay Teachers! This site, found at www.teacherspayteachers.com/, is an awesome site where teachers can get ideas and teacher lessons from other teachers. There is a price for everything you buy, but it is all very cheap! This is great, because teachers can use these unique lesson plans and teacher ideas in their classroom! Looking at the different lesson ideas by other teachers might spark creativity in teachers as well! Below is a pencil flower vase that I made from Pinterest! As some know, Common Sense Media is a great online resource to go to as a parent or an educator when needing to educate your kids or your students about digital citizenship. On this website, there is a "For Educators" tab and a "For Parents" tab that you can click on to get more information on how to teach your child or student digital citizenship. The first tab I want to talk about is the "For Educators" tab. There are tons of helpful information for teachers, but I am going to focus solely on parent/teacher communication. On Common Sense Media, I learned how to affectively communicate with the parentes of my students without having to worry about an overload of emails every day. I learned that is it super important to set up an email account or another messaging form where you can type something up and with a click of a button, all the parents get your message. The more you inform your students' parents about before it happens, will keep them from sending a billion emails to you every day. It is also super important to have some sort of a mobile/technology class page where the parents and other family members can get on there and see what their child is doing in class. This is also great for posting announcements. The more communication the parent and teacher have, the better the school year will go for the child. The next part of this blog, I want to discuss what Common Sense Media has to offer the parents. Common Sense Media is great for parents that want to have a family night, but don't know what is appropriate or not. Common Sense Media has many different movie reviews and ratings on what age the child should be to watch the movie. This is important, beacuse some parents let their child watch a movie that isn't quite appropriate. There is also a tab the parent can click on if they have an concerns. The most common concerns are listed with a couple of answers. Common Sense Media has a lot of fun, elementary level videos on what digital citzenship is. These videos would be great for to show my students someday. The parents can use this website if they have an questions or concerns with how to help their child use technology appropriately. I might try and show my nine year old sister some of the videos, because I want her to have digital citizenship. Common Sense Media is a great resource for information on digital citizenship. If you would like to get more information, you can check it out at www.commonsensemedia.org . Thanks!
The first question you might be asking is, "What on Earth is digital citizenship?" Well, I'll tell you! Digital citizenship means being responsible while using technology. Digital citizenship is when you act appropriate when on the Internet. You are not clicking on bad websites. You are not bullying on the Internet. You click on safe websites. Digital citizenship also means being truthful with your parents with what you are searching on the Internet. If somehing bad pops up, you are responsible enough to tell your parent or a trusted adult around you.
Below are the nine elements of Digital Citizenship: Etiquette Literacy Access Security Heath&Wellness Commerce Cpmmunication Rights&Responsibilities Law A helpful resource that teachers can find useful for talking about digital citizenship is below... www.teachinctrl.org/lessons/livingdigitalworld.php This website is great for teachers, because there are lesson plans about digital citizenship on this website, along with videos for the teacher to watch and for the students to watch. Common Sense Media is a nonprofit organization that helps insure kids are responsibilty and safe when using technology. Common Sense Media provides teachers, parentes, and other adults with helpful information on how to insure kids stay safe while using technology. This organization can be used in the classroom by teachers to help them remember what good sites are and what aren't. There's also a list of apporpriate movies for kids that are beneficial for teachers and parents. There's videos on parenting tips as well. This website will help you, as the adult, insure your child and students stay safe when surfing the web! Here is the link for you to visit: www.commonsensemedia.org/ Here is a great video for students to watch about digital citizenship. This is from Common Sense Media! From researching different keyboarding, educational, and assistive games, I have learned that there are all kinds of different games out there for children to have fun doing, but also learning at the same time! These games range from practicing knowing the keys of the keyboard, learning different math, reading, and science skills through educational games, and also being able to use talking calculators if a child needs help! In this blog, I am going to discuss what my favorite game is after researching!
My favorite resource I found was ABCYA! This educational game is found from www.abcya.com. This website is wonderful for all aged elementary students from pre- k to fifth grade. I bookmarked this site, because the site just really caught my eye! The website's homepage is bright and very kid-friendly! It makes me excited about learning and playing the games! When asking my nine year old sister about what she thought about the bright and bold homepage of ABCYA, she said, "Sissy, this can't be an educational game, because it looks too fun." This is coming from a third grader. On www.abcya.com, the kids can pick the grade they are in that a way the games are appropriate for their grade level. There are multiple kinds of subjects the students can practice. Once they have chosen the subject, they have a list of games they can play. Therefore, the kids can have fun, but also be learning! The only two things that might stomp some from using ABCYA is that the kids must have an account and the kids must have access to technology. Some schools might not have access to a lot of technology tools in the classrooms and some teachers might not want to take the time to sign up for ABCYA. I had no idea how many different resources there were out there, but I am glad I now know. I will definitely be using ABCYA in my classroom! I hope after reading this blog, you will be able to search through different resources of your own and find what works for your kiddos and what doesn't! Happy researching and good luck! If is the link in case you would like to check out ABCYA: http://www.abcya.com/ Thank you for reading my blog! Have you ever gotten tired of hand writing tests? Have you ever dreamed of having the kids take quizzes and tests online? If you answered yes to those two questions, you are reading the right blog!
Google Forms is an awesome Google Drive app that allows you to do so many different things. You can make a whole test within minutes! You can make the questions, decide how many different answer options there will be, and you can even add pictures and videos for the test! How cool is that!? Google Forms is a great way to have fun making the tests and making your classroom more modern! Google Forms has many positives! Here are a couple different positives of using Google Forms in your classroom: 1. It's modern! 2. You can design your own quiz/test very easily and very uniquely for your students! 3. There's cute formats for contact information, quizzes, RSVP's, and more! Anything you want to send out to parents, you can do that through Google Forms! With everything, there are always some negatives to every good story. Here are some of the negatives: 1. You cannot change the font. 2. You cannot change the background of the different forms. 3. The way the different forms look might not be what you school principal wants you to do. The next site I want to talk about is Kahoot! Are you ready to make learning and studying for those awful tests fun!? If you are, Kahoot is a great tool to use! Kahoot is a fun, online game that you can use when studying for anything! After you sign in, you can search for any subject of your desire. The awesome feature about Kahoot is that if you do not like the different trivia games Kahoot already has made, you, as the teacher, parent, or kid can make a test of any subject. After you pick or design your test, there will be a code that comes up. The one that is administering the test will need to make sure all the kids playing types the code in to their device. After that, the kids can pick their name and the test begins. It is important that the person administering the test reads the questions off, because the kids taking the test cannot see the question or answer options. The answers are in different colored squares and the answers are represented by shapes. For each test you get right, Kahoot will give you points. You can see the other players playing with you and if you are in first, second, third, and so on. Here are some positives of Kahoot: 1. It is a fun way to study! 2. You can study and "take tests" with your friends even when they are not with you! 3. Kahoot has thousands of trivia games and subjects to choose from! Here are also some of the negatives: 1. The kids cannot see the questions being given. 2. Some kids might be colored blind or deaf. Therefore, they might not be able to hear the teacher given the question or be able to see the four different colored squares. 3. Some kids might not know the shapes, which represent the answers. If you are interested in Google Forms and/or Kahoot, here are the links: https://getkahoot.com/ https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/ Thank you for reading my blog! Hello, parents, friends, and family members, my name is Ms. Embrey, and I am going to start blogging every week about upcoming events going on in the school and in my first grade classroom! I hope you are just as excited as I am!
I have decided to start blogging to help keep parents and family members of students in my class updated on what their child is doing every week! This is going to be fun and exciting! I am trying to build a better classroom community this year, so I hope by doing blogs every week, it will help build a wonderful classroom community! Blogging is also great, because family members that do not live close to your child can see these blogs! I would highly recommend letting other family members know about the blogs, so they can also see what their nephew, niece, cousin...etc is doing in the classroom! Because I am a fairly new teacher to the school, I want to make sure everyone is on the same page and working together! I don't want anything to be confusing. I hope to have a great and successful year! Blogging is also great for veteran teachers, because it shows them the modern way get information out to parents, friends, and other family members. They can also share their pounds and pounds of knowledge that they have from being veteran teachers and blog about effective teacher tips for new teachers to read. I hope you have enjoyed my very first blog! I can't wait to read the feedback! Thanks, Kaitlin |
