As some know, Common Sense Media is a great online resource to go to as a parent or an educator when needing to educate your kids or your students about digital citizenship. On this website, there is a "For Educators" tab and a "For Parents" tab that you can click on to get more information on how to teach your child or student digital citizenship. The first tab I want to talk about is the "For Educators" tab. There are tons of helpful information for teachers, but I am going to focus solely on parent/teacher communication. On Common Sense Media, I learned how to affectively communicate with the parentes of my students without having to worry about an overload of emails every day. I learned that is it super important to set up an email account or another messaging form where you can type something up and with a click of a button, all the parents get your message. The more you inform your students' parents about before it happens, will keep them from sending a billion emails to you every day. It is also super important to have some sort of a mobile/technology class page where the parents and other family members can get on there and see what their child is doing in class. This is also great for posting announcements. The more communication the parent and teacher have, the better the school year will go for the child. The next part of this blog, I want to discuss what Common Sense Media has to offer the parents. Common Sense Media is great for parents that want to have a family night, but don't know what is appropriate or not. Common Sense Media has many different movie reviews and ratings on what age the child should be to watch the movie. This is important, beacuse some parents let their child watch a movie that isn't quite appropriate. There is also a tab the parent can click on if they have an concerns. The most common concerns are listed with a couple of answers. Common Sense Media has a lot of fun, elementary level videos on what digital citzenship is. These videos would be great for to show my students someday. The parents can use this website if they have an questions or concerns with how to help their child use technology appropriately. I might try and show my nine year old sister some of the videos, because I want her to have digital citizenship. Common Sense Media is a great resource for information on digital citizenship. If you would like to get more information, you can check it out at www.commonsensemedia.org . Thanks!
